Unlike conventional epoxy primers, which rely on a clean, profiled blast-cleaned surface for mechanical adhesion, surface tolerant coatings use penetrating binder systems that wet out and displace moisture on the surface, bond to rust layers, and achieve meaningful adhesion to the substrate even in suboptimal conditions.

This does not mean surface-tolerant products eliminate the need for preparation , loose rust, flaking paint, grease, and contamination must still be removed. But they significantly lower the surface preparation threshold required for a usable protective coating outcome.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

Surface-tolerant products are not a substitute for proper preparation where preparation is achievable. They perform best as a pragmatic solution where ideal conditions cannot be met, and their performance ceiling in very severe environments is lower than a properly applied system over blast-cleaned steel. For new-build work or full recoat shutdowns, blast cleaning and a conventional primer system will always deliver better long-term performance.
